Autonomous Luggage Assistant is Your New Travelling BFF

We know from previous posts that the University of Waterloo students are nothing less than geniuses. That is why we know we will always be impressed with any new projects they have! This year at the Mechatronics Design Symposium hosted by University of Waterloo, there will be many new and exciting projects! One of them is  The Engineering team’s project called “AuLA”  and it stands for Autonomous Luggage Assistant.

Purpose

As its name suggests, AuLA is supposed to be an assistant robot that carries your carry on bags so that you don’t have to! It also follows you around and makes sure the luggage is not lost. It makes travelling so much more relaxing and less stressful. You no longer have to worry about carrying your bags, jackets, and looking after your children. AuLA does all of that for you! Well, except the looking after your children part…maybe in a future update, it will be able to!

Technique

On a more technical note, the way that AuLA is able to do what it claims is by registering the image of the user into its system. It uses image processing systems that enable it to track you and to identify you but within a safe distance. Because it stores your profile, it is only able to follow the user. This is good as it ensures that it can always find the user even in the middle of a large crowd. AuLA  is also well designed to safely turn when you turn and to adjusts its speed to match the users’.

Stay tuned for updates about the AuLA team at the 2017 Symposium!
