AV1 Robot Allows Kid to Be Virtual Mascot

If you saw a photo of Jack McLinden aged 14 of Liverpool you might think, “what a lovely lad. With all his life before him”, although you will discover his life will be different from other boys. Jack will never see his beloved Everton soccer team play live at Goodison Park two miles from his home due to his multiple health conditions, including needing oxygen support 24/7. However, thanks to an AV1 Robot and battery, Jack’s dreams came true the other day

The Happy Day an AV1 Robot Paid Jack McLinden a Visit

The Norwegian start-up company, No Isolation, developed its AV1 Robot as an avatar for seriously ill children and young adults because it wanted to provide an audio-visual link to a remote event by standing proxy for the person.

An ailing school pupil or college student can virtually attend a class or college lecture thanks to the rotating head. The robot flashes a blue light if the remote person has a question. It even has a whispering mode that amplifies a weak or feeble voice. AVI responds to tapping and swiping gestures on Android and iOS telephony. The battery – we assume a lithium one – has eight hours between charges.

How Jack McLinden and the AV1 Robot Played Mascot on Match Day

Jack McLinden desperately wanted to be there when his team played Newcastle United on 23 April 2018, but he couldn’t. So instead, the Everton captain carried the one-kilogram robot onto the pitch as proxy. Its 13 megapixel camera relayed live feedback to him lying in bed. He was even able to chat with the Everton players in the tunnel waiting to run onto the field.

We are exceptionally proud that our favorite topic, batteries had a role in this small miracle. Without it, Jack McLinden’s dream of being a mascot for his favorite football club would probably never have happened. The one-kilogram AV1 Robot measures 26.8 cm high x 17.5 cm wide x 12.9 cm in case you wondered, and Everton truimphed 1 – 0 on the night.
