The polar vortex shifting unexpectedly south over North America reminded us how defenseless we are against extreme weather. Starter and electric vehicle batteries have also been taking strain. A 13 KVAL post of February 2019 drew our attention. This was because it claimed batteries are the leading vehicle killer this winter.
The Number One Vehicle Killer is Batteries This Winter

“The number one killer is batteries,” 13 KVAL says. Preparing vehicles for freezing winter weather is a high priority if we want to keep driving. Besides, temperatures are still dropping as typical winter weather returns. Better have yours tested.
Auto starter batteries may survive -50 C in laboratory conditions. However, the prolonged -30 C we have been experiencing can tip the scales. 13 KVAL’s battery consultant reiterates, “The leading vehicle killer is batteries” when they face tough conditions. This is because temperatures below freezing can take a battery out if it is reaching the end of its life. If in doubt have an expert inspect yours.
Other Useful Things to Know This Winter
Tires are also critical factors in extreme cold winter. A bursting tire can result in an uncontrollable skid. Worn treads are less effective on black ice. It can be a false economy to enter winter with only a quarter tread remaining.

Ice can be the leading vehicle killer in terms of external components. Turning on the windshield wipers below freezing can ruin the rubber blades.
Pour lukewarm water over them before driving off. KVAL 13 signs off by suggesting a home brewed de-icer comprising 2/3 alcohol and 1/3 water.
“That way whether it’s your door handles, windshield or wipers you can save hundreds by not damaging them,” it suggests. The people at UPS Battery Center wish North Americans safe driving as they face up to the accumulation of snow and ice. It’s a comforting thought the summer will return.
