The UK National Fire Chiefs Council represents area managers, and is the professional voice of the UK fire and rescue service. The Council recently conducted research in association with campaign group Recycle Your Electricals. This work revealed that battery materials dumped in rubbish bins are causing more than three fires a day in the United Kingdom.
Battery Materials in Garbage ‘A Disaster Waiting to Happen’
Phil Clark representing National Fire Chiefs Council was clearly concerned when he spoke to The Guardian news on May 10, 2024. “Fires involving the incorrect disposal of lithium-ion batteries are a disaster waiting to happen,” he told their reporter.
“Fire services are seeing an increasing number of incidents, but these are preventable by correctly and carefully disposing of electricals,” the spokesperson insisted. There were more than 1,200 fires in the UK waste system in the past 12 months, compared with 700 in 2022.
Combustible Items Inside Everyday Items
The battery materials causing fires are inside everyday items such as wireless headphones, laptops, electric toothbrushes, and disposable vapes, the report explains. Although it strikes us that everyday users may not be actively aware they contain lithium-ion batteries when they trash them.
Those devices and the materials inside them find their way into garbage trucks with compactors. These discharge their loads into mechanical crushers at recycling sites. The sheer volumes are too large for humans to sift through them. The process is almost entirely automatic.
Lithium-ion batteries endanger waste operators, firefighters, and the public when they are damaged or crushed. They release oxygen as they burn, and these fires can spread rapidly. We are throwing away some of our most precious materials on earth as trash!
We are the only people who can sift through our garbage, no matter where we are in the world. Surely we should all start doing this now, and help avoid those destructive and costly fires?
