Big Battery Hunt Turns Up an Elephant

There was great excitement at Hanwell Zoo in West London, England when Duracell delivered an elephant the other day. A spokesman for the zoo said, “We are very proud to be the home of the big battery hunt elephant. And we are very keen to continue to encourage our visitors to reduce landfill waste.” An elephant never forgets. Let’s all remember our duty to keep batteries out of landfill.

Over a Million Schoolkids Joined the Big Battery Hunt

The big battery hunt elephant reminds us that 20,000 tons of battery cells end up in UK landfill sites every year. Duracell is conducting the hunt in many other countries too, in order to stress how foolish this is. The battery chemicals leech into the soil, and gradually find their way through rivers to the ocean.

Moreover, we are throwing away rare chemicals that we should really be recycling and using over and over again. An incredible 1.3 million UK primary schoolkids enthusiastically found, and deposited used portable batteries in special bins. ‘The participation was overwhelming with over 25% of all primary schools in the UK getting involved.” Duracell told Swins Digital.

How Some Batteries Created a 10-Ton Elephant

It was quite a grueling task assembling the elephant after the big battery hunt. However all concerned are convinced it will be worth it. The goal is to create a visual celebration of the environmental efforts of primary school children in the campaign.

Gen Z is already active; however these kids will have to face the longer-term effects of climate change. What better ambassadors can we have for the counter movement than these ‘little people’, with big hearts so adept at influencing their parents?

“It is so inspiring to see the younger generation actively involved in making the world a better place. And teaching their own parents and loved ones about the importance of recycling,” says elephant sculptor Tony Diaz. He gave 400 hours of his time.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
