CDC defines immunocompromised folk as people with weakened immune systems. It explains they may have inherited a disease causing it. However, they may also have developed their condition after taking certain immunosuppressive drugs. Examples of these drugs include medication for HIV / AIDS, cancer, and transplant procedures. COVID-19 booster shots for immunocompromised folk are now a growing possibility.
‘Booster Shots For Immunocompromised Folk Likely’
Chief of U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Fauci considers selective boosters more likely. This apparent about-take follows news from Israel that two-shot Pfizer vaccine could be less effective against the Delta variant. Moreover, the surge in cases among unvaccinated U.S. citizens is increasing the likelihood of infections too.
However, it’s still ‘a work in progress’ according to Yahoo News. But, as the virus spreads vulnerable and immunocompromised people could possibly benefit from a third jab. ‘It evolves, Dr. Fauci says, ‘like in so many other areas of the pandemic. You have got to look at the data.’
New Knowledge About Pfizer in Israeli Data
The Israeli data, which includes the emerging Delta variant, reveals the following for the period late-June to early-July 2021:
1… Preliminary findings indicate Pfizer could be less effective at preventing infection from the Delta variant
2… However, the vaccine still proved 90% effective at preventing severe infection and hospitalization
3… This harmonizes with a UK finding Pfizer is 88% effective against symptomatic Delta infections after two shots.
But at this point in time there’s no clear policy about booster shots for immunocompromised folk. That’s because CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is still examining the data.
In the interim, Dr Fauci suggests fully vaccinated people might want to consider wearing face masks indoors. We suspect this advice is particularly relevant for immunocompromised folk, and otherwise vulnerable people.
