The message was loud and clear at One Earth Summit in Hong Kong on March 25, 2024. There is no ‘Planet B’ to which we could retreat. Close to 100 speakers rammed home that fact. We are in Year Four of the Decade of Action, but what have we achieved? CATL founder Dr Robin Zeng assured attendees at the summit that he will share his technology. But as CATL promises to share battery secrets, will others follow its example?
CATL Promises to Share Battery Secrets to Speed Transition
This information exchange will only be between entities – including competitors – who share a common goal. They must be “committed to accelerating the transition to green energy, electric transportation, and a circular economy” according to the CATL website.
“Now, more than ever, we must work together if we are to solve humanity’s biggest problems, such as climate change,” Dr. Zeng insisted. Continuous technological advancement is the key, and we must work together he affirmed.
The CATL founder emphasized CATL’s intention to be “the world’s number one battery technology company”. The media announcement reinforced the message it has over 20,000 R&D staff worldwide, and spent US$2.59 billion on research and development in 2023.
It appears that CATL promises to share battery information on a significant scale. After all, it does have nearly 30,000 issued and pending patents worldwide. Significantly these include its fast-charging lithium-phosphate, and six-hundred-mile-range ‘Qilin’ batteries.
Sharing Battery Knowledge Is Key to Climate Change
Burning oil, coal and gas from carbon fossil has polluted our atmosphere, and caused our planet to warm. The only known way to reverse this situation is to use renewable resources instead. However, we can only access these through elemental forces like wind, solar, and tidal at present.
Those forces are intermittent and variable, and we must accumulate them in batteries, at least for now. “We must unite like never before to tackle our most pressing challenges,” Dr. Zeng reasons. “And I believe open innovation is the key to supercharging the green energy transition.”
