Community Tablet Hauled by a Donkey

The internet is our window to the world. How else would we visit our social media, or for that matter, do our job. If we were to visit KAMALEON Eventos Tecnológicos, we would discover a Mozambique non-profit hoping to extend digital education to remote rural communities. They are bringing a community tablet service to the people, drawn by a humble donkey.

Half of Mozambique Can’t Google

Mobile phone owners will grow in Sub-Saharan Africa from 250 to 634 million between 2017 and 2025. Some countries are, however, more fortunate than others. Therefore, Kenya has 91% saturation while only half of Mozambique has connections.

Dayn Amade founded “Community Tablet” after he watched his two sons learn to build things by watching YouTube on their tablets. “This can be used in rural communities where people aren’t able to do basic things,” he realized. “Because they have never had a tutorial,” he explains. Then Dayn Amade set to work to address this situation by taking a solar powered community tablet into the countryside.

Dayn Amade’s Simple, Sensible Solution

First, Dayn Amade built an enclosed trailer he could tow by pickup or donkey. Then he fitted solar panels and batteries to power four LCD screens. Now music announces his arrival before excited villagers watch a short video about digital literacy.

Then he invites them to use smaller touchscreen tablets to ask questions about what they have seen. “When we arrive in a community, ” he explains “we try and make it a party,. We want to attract people and we do it with music.” He hopes to educate and empower people to do mobile banking, visit clinics, and vote in Mozambique elections.

Dayn Amade has obtained a patent for his community tablet. He hopes to encourage other people to supply digital education to their people in rural communities.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
