Things to Consider When Buying Solar Batteries

A solar panel installation represents quite a large investment, but it pays back in time. Major outlays include the panels, the solar charge controller, and the electrician’s time to connect everything up correctly. And then there’s the cost of solar batteries themselves. At this stage of the project, we may face temptation to cut corners.

The Upfront Cost of Solar Batteries

Batteries literally are the heart of solar power health. As a rule of thumb, the cheaper they are, the shorter they will last.

The battery industry is highly competitive, and the cost of solar batteries thus represents the quality the manufacturer puts in them. Some ‘free batteries’ included in a solar panel deal are decent ones. Others may be not.

The thickness of the lead plates in lead-acid batteries influences how long they last before they wear out. Thus, a lighter battery may be a convenience, but this may be the only advantage. To make sure you get the quality you deserve, obtain the battery specification before you sign. Then google it and find out what reviewers say. We are always here to give advice.

The Benefits of Sealed Versus Flooded Batteries

Flooded lead-acid batteries are the ones with removable caps you have to top up from time to time. While sealed ones have their electrolyte in a stable gel or fiberglass mat inside.

The cost of solar batteries also hinges on the choice of which electrolyte. Flooded batteries are cheaper, but that is where the benefits can end.

Sealed batteries are okay to use if you are able to check the battery electrolyte regularly, and top it up when necessary. However, they must be in well-ventilated space for safety. Moreover if they start to leak, they need a drip tray large enough to hold all the electrolyte. We sell sealed lead-acid batteries to folk who don’t need these complications. The cost of solar batteries made that way is higher, but their design life is correspondingly longer.
