Could Australia Become a Virtual Power Plant?

A virtual power plant is a term for decentralized power generation incorporating a multitude of smaller units. The general principle is individual households use own solar energy and batteries to meet their requirements, plus a bit more for the community. Almost a third of Australian households have rooftop solar according to Clean Technica. Could Australia become a virtual power plant?

Australia Could Become a Virtual Power Plant But Not Yet

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency is partly funding a number of small projects to investigate the idea. One study confirms a ‘coordinated battery system’ could deliver grid frequency control ancillary services to maintain quality of supply.

However, this is more likely to be useful during infrequent events, as opposed to supporting daily peaks. The primary cause is financial returns for individual householders would be less than gains from using the energy themselves.

Therefore, we are unlikely to see a significant take-up of distributed power until storage battery prices become more affordable. Clean Technica adds distribution utilities also need to remold their systems to become more user-friendly for households.

We Are a Step Down the Road, Not At Our Destination Yet

Australia could become a virtual power plant in future, of that there’s no doubt in our minds. The nation down under already has the highest penetration rate of household solar in the world. It added another 3 gigawatts during the pandemic despite a disrupted economy.

However, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency survey of 7,150 qualifying individuals recommends more research into financial benefits for consumers. It agrees we need to investigate more innovative ways to uncap this potential.

However, one factor is abundantly clear. Australia needs denser household batteries at more affordable prices. So once again we find battery research and development at the heart of the greener economy. Universal renewable energy is not yet in our grasp, but it is coming nearer.
