This is not the first incident of a COVID break out among animals. These infections are concerning, because they add weight to the possibility of the virus jumping between humans and animals. Denver Zoo where the outbreak occurred, first opened in 1896. And it continues to be the most popular, paid attraction in the metro according to Wikipedia.
How Big Is the Outbreak, How Many Animals?
The Guardian leads with the story of a pair of hyenas aged 22 and 23. However, eleven lions and two tigers also gave positive results previously. The hyenas, Ngozi and Kibo showed mild symptoms of cough, slight nasal discharge, and lethargy after the earlier COVID break out among big cats.
‘Hyenas are famously tough, resilient animals,’ a Denver Zoo spokesperson assured media. Because they are highly tolerant to anthrax, rabies and distemper. But they are otherwise healthy and should make a full recovery.’ Denver Zoo announced the earlier tiger and lion infections on its website on November 3, 2021.
‘A number of big cats have come down with COVID-19 at zoos throughout the country,’ their senior vice president advised. ‘Fortunately, the vast majority have fully recovered. And the upside is that there’s an established knowledge base for us to draw from, to help treat our animals.’
What Triggered This COVID Break Out Among Animals?
Multiple species worldwide have contracted the virus according to The Guardian website. However, this was usually after close contact with an infected human. But US Department of Agriculture, overseeing National Veterinary Services Laboratories is still developing their data base.
‘People with Covid-19 should therefore avoid close contact with animals, including pets,’ the zoo spokesperson advised The Guardian. Denver Zoo assures the public it is taking ‘extraordinary measures to safeguard the health of its guests, staff, and animals’.
‘Our animal care staff adheres to strict COVID-19 protocols around our animals,’ it continues. Including required use of personal protective equipment, hygiene, cleaning, employee self-screening, and health management.
