We’re a consumer-based society and that is nothing new. However, it is time we start doing something about it because careless consumption of things that we don’t even need is having a huge negative impact on our earth!
Yesterday was Earth Day and if one of your resolutions for earth day was to start shopping in a more environmentally-conscious way then you are not alone! Keep reading to learn why locally shopping is a more responsible way of doing it!

Ways to Consciously Shop:
- Thrifting! Or as some call it, charity shopping. This is nothing new but it has a reputation for being more reserved for the poor and those prescribing to the “alternative hippie” lifestyle as you an find the most unique things while thrifting. However, thrifting can be for everyone! It helps folks to shop more locally and to up-cycle within their community so that what’s one man person’s old jeans becomes another person’s newly cycled shorts.
- If thrifting is not up your ally, then consider locally shopping for domestic brands! Look for signs that say “made in (insert your country)” or “made in (insert state or province)” and help support your local communities! Sometimes, this means that the items can be more expensive but it often also means that they are of higher quality!
- While shopping locally is a big improvement from international shopping, if you want to step it up a notch then opt for eco-friendly material such as organic cotton, hemp clothing, linen…etc.
- Participate in local events promtoting green shopping such the Drop, Swap, and Shop event!

Drop, Swap, and Shop
Among many events that took place yesterday in Toronto, one that was particularly interesting is the Drop, Swap and Shop event! The premise of this event was for folks to give back to their community with their used clothing/products in exchange for others’. For each 25 items that one person brought in, they would get a ticket that would be used as the currency to buy other items at the event.
800 people showed up at the event for the fourth year running! Now that’s an amazing amount of people trying to reduce their waste!
We hope your takeaway from this post is to just try your best and to experiment with thrifting, second-hand clothing and up-cycling in your community!
