How COVID-19 Affects Different Age Groups

It’s essential to understand how COVID-19 affects different age groups as we prepare ourselves for the long haul. That’s because it has become evident we will never stamp it out completely. We don’t fully understand how some people don’t catch the disease. However, we do know it is important to avoid being too close to infected people.

COVID-19 Affects Different Age Groups in Terms of Immunity

The COVID-19 disease is a struggle inside our bodies against an invasive virus. Our immune system is our first line of defense, aided by prescription medication. The age factor plays a major part. Kids get off lightly, young adults have flu. Older people from fifty upwards are at increasing risk of a severe attack.

Why is this so? Why does COVID-19 affect age groups differently? Living as long as to 70 was unusual even two generations ago. Our bodies are physical things and their systems eventually wear out. Our immune system therefore ages along with us. It starts wearing thin in middle age when we start facing chronic diseases like diabetes.

How Chronic Diseases Overlay the Effects of Aging Immunity

There are a host of chronic conditions that weaken our body’s resilience. We are writing about several in this series, because we believe it is important people know. If you have a chronic condition and are following your treatment, then the thing to watch out for is overlaying it with COVID-19.

Doctors recommend staying at home as much as possible after we retire, and cancel all travel plans. Order in your supplies and prepare for a more solitary life. However, your digital communication lines are still open and we encourage you to use them.

You need to be extra careful if you are in a long-care facility or a nursing home. COVID-19 may affect age groups differently but the population density plays a role too. Follow their instructions carefully to avoid infection. Tell them the moment you feel ill. There is a good chance you will not, if you take care.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
