The world stood by in admiration as China controlled successive COVID-19 outbreaks with social precision. CNN explained “how people … have largely tolerated living under some of the world’s most stringent Covid-19 controls” on March 25, 2022. However, it also wondered is China’s COVID policy running out of steam now?
Are the People Running Ragged Over China’s COVID Policy?
CNN suspects some Chinese residents have grown tired of “restricted borders, constant digital tracking, mass testing and snap lock downs”. We’ve seen similar responses in North America and Europe where many prefer to ‘live with the virus’ instead. We don’t want to take sides on this issue. We’re more interested in how opinions are shifting.
The CNN article says latest measures do not have appear to have throttled the most recent China outbreak. We do know there have been “rumblings from frustrated citizens” as it calls them and we understand their frustrations. “You can’t do this — we need to eat and pay the rent,” has been heard among some Shenzhen protesters.
Should We Relax COVID Restriction and Live with the Virus?
This question is at the core of the debate, as COVID policies run down in China and most other places. BBC notes the following shifts in China policy in an article we link to below:
1… People with mild symptoms no longer need to isolate at designated hospitals.
2… However, they still do need to “isolate at centralized facilities”.
3… Quarantine periods are shorter. Community testing has replaced city-wide programs.
4…. Self-test kits are becoming available. Laboratory tests are mandatory after positive self tests.
Will China eventually come to terms with living with the virus too? We can’t answer that question. However, we do suspect the virus is not done with us yet, and we still need to be careful.
