COVID-19 Returns to China: Firm Response

The People’s Republic has been firm in its response to the COVID-19 resurgence in Wuhan city. That’s because eleven migrant workers developed infections Monday this week, and these appear to be local transmissions. The city is launching a campaign to test its eleven million citizens, as COVID-19 returns to China after a year-long respite.

China Locks Down Entire Cities to Their Homes

The number of domestic cases from the fresh outbreak had risen to 61 Tuesday, according to ENCA news channel. China responded by shutting down entire cities, severing transport links, and confining families to their homes. Major cities rolling out testing include Beijing, Nanjing, and Wuhan.

However, the caseload from the Delta strain had risen to 328 by today, August 3, 2021. But China is not the only country experiencing it. Australia is under severe lock down restrictions too. United States cases rose 150% in the past two weeks. The UK is passing through a surge.

It will be interesting to note how China’s and Australia’s top-down policies perform, compared to softer measures in other countries. Meanwhile the residents of Wuhan city are clearly concerned.

Wuhan Panic Buying as COVID-19 Returns to China

NPR News reported August 3, 2023 how Wuhan residents are responding to being cut off from transport links. Panic buying has returned to stores, and we are unaware of measures to control it. New infections are appearing in more than 35 cities in half the country’s provinces and regions, according to The Associated Press.

‘Viral genome sequencing found all the strains to be the highly infectious Delta variant’ People’s Daily reported. ‘Cities hit by the recent resurgence have promptly taken action to curb the spread of the coronavirus.’ Our thoughts are with the people sheltering there, as COVID-19 returns to China when they thought they had it nailed.
