San Francisco Chronicle was spot-on when it posted we are all too eager to believe the pandemic is over. However, their piece of September 24, 2022 does suggest this may still be ‘a time of tradeoffs’. There’s a difference between having an arsenal of vaccines and lifesaving tools, and finally putting the virus to bed it says. Is the pandemic in a lull or simply taking a summer break?
Is the Pandemic in a Lull or Waiting for a Winter Surge?
Certainly when we look down the average American street, residents are trading precaution for freedom. Face masks are largely a thing of the past, and if we distance in queues we may be the only one doing so.
“It’s a social mirage that the pandemic is over, or can be called over in some meaningful way,” says Martha Lincoln. The medical anthropologist was speaking to San Francisco Chronicle when she added “We’re not really out of the woods yet.”
Perhaps we need to distinguish between the words ‘COVID’ and ‘pandemic’. There are still too many people dying to claim victory over the virus. We are having surges in a number of countries. Moreover, more of us than we like have symptoms dragging on for months.
Are We Struggling in a Pandemic Doldrums?
“We’re in this middle ground, which is difficult,” according to Susan Philip, San Francisco health officer. “We’re not at the full end, but we’re not in the throes of having to be worried. And be mindful every day about what the virus is doing.”
“People should remain if not vigilant, then at least thoughtful about limiting their exposure to the virus,” adds Nicholas Moss. The Alameda County health officer was speaking to San Francisco Chronicle earlier.
“The last two winters have not been kind to us, from a COVID perspective,” explains Sara Cody, Santa Clara County health officer. “Maybe this winter will be different, but probably not.” If she is correct then this is still a time to be vigilant. and take extra care of our health.
