Researchers from Universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, and Swansea, UK studied the records of 48 million adults. What they found convinced them the link between COVID and life-threatening thromboses lasts for at least 49 weeks. We have known of the COVID and blood clotting connection for a while. However, we were totally unaware it lasts for so long.

COVID and Blood Clotting Link – Circulation Concerns

Major arterial and venous thrombotic diseases can cause obstructions in our life-giving circulation. The researchers linked this to 10,500 cases of heart attack, stroke and other blood clotting complications in England and Wales during 2020. However, we hasten to mention that the statistical chance of this affecting any individual is low, and reduces further as the months pass.

The team drew the health records of 48 million unvaccinated adults in UK during the first wave of the pandemic. We include a link to their report below, in case you would like to delve deeper. However, their high level findings and recommendations concerning the COVID and blood clotting relationship include the following:

  • Health workers should lower the blood pressure of high risk patients.
  • However, those with mild or moderate disease are also at risk.

The Relationship Between the Disease and Blood Clots

The 48 million people were 21-times more likely to have a heart attack or stroke during the first week after COVID-19 diagnosis. News Medical & Life Sciences confirms these traumas are mostly the result of blood clots blocking arteries. However, the risk reduced to 3.9-times more likely after 4 weeks, although this is still concerning.

It is important to note in this regard that those records date from before mass vaccination. And that Delta and Omicron variants were not circulating at the time. Therefore the researchers are continuing their study to understand the effect of vaccination, and the impact of newer variants on the relationship.
