Fusion Power Is Knocking On the Door

Green energy really took off in North America in the first half of 2022. Forbes reports renewables provided 25.5% of U.S. energy during the first four months. And there were none of the hiccups some skeptics predicted. This beat coal’s contribution of 20.2% hands down. But fusion power is knocking on the door too.

What Fusion Power Would Do If It Opened the Door

World Nuclear News reported July 14, 2022 private nuclear fusion companies declared USD2.83 billion of investment in the past year. Fusion Industry Association, Trinomics consultants, and elements of European Commission found 33 private companies are already developing commercial fusion. This is ten more than they found the previous year.

Fusion Industry Association says the primary goal of these companies is electricity generation. However, off-grid energy, hydrogen, and clean fuels are also on the table. Confidence is apparently growing we could see fusion power on the grid by 2030. If fusion power opened the door that wide it could be the energy disruptor of the century.

But it might achieve even more than that, according to World Nuclear News. That’s because it would break the tension between suppliers of fossil fuel, and consumers. And they believe ‘This would help to secure peace for the long term, by removing our reliance on fossil fuel. And therefore providing the basis for prosperity, safety, and security for many years to come.”

Bold Words. But How Would Nuclear Fusion Actually Work?

Nuclear fusion is a natural process whereby stars generate their energy in their cores. However, fusion reactions on earth by human hands are not the same as fission in nuclear power stations. That’s because they are a clean, efficient and unlimited source of energy, but without toxic and radioactive byproducts.
