Politics often serve as a catalyst for — or against — commitments to go green.  In Canada, a potentially ground-breaking initiative involving Sodexo Canada and Bullfrog power, reflects commitments toward green electricity.

Who are Sodexo Canada and Bullfrog Power?

Two separate companies that will be partnering in this strategy towards sustainability and green electricity.

Sodexo Canada is a corporation that delivers numerous on-site services in various sectors like healthcare, and education. They are a collective group of investors, clients, employees and consumers.

Bullfrog Power is a green energy provider that offers power from renewable energy sources. Their electricity comes from regionally sourced wind and hydro facilities.

Currently, two-thirds of Canada’s electricity supply comes from renewable sources like wind and hydropower. The country generates 66 per cent of its energy using renewable sources.

The initiative:

Through this partnership, Sodexo Canada commits to powering three of their offices and one warehouse with green electricity. This is part of a commitment to reduce their carbon emissions by 34 per cent by 2034.

The agreement ensures that Bullfrog Power will match the amount of conventional electricity that Sodexo uses in its Montreal, Burlington, and Vancouver offices. The company will match this energy supply in its Calgary warehouse as well.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index consistently rates Sodexo as one of the best companies in upholding corporate responsibility.  This makes them the perfect match for Bullfrog Power – a provider known for transparency and accountability in performance.

Initiatives like this increase our expectations for corporate social responsibility. Canadian companies need to make more ethical decisions. Discretion should be based on sustainable practice and environmental ethics.

Responsible corporate conduct bolsters the economy and creates a valued global presence. What we do domestically sets the tone for foreign relations.

Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity is a combination of wind and low-impact hydropower. It is sourced from renewable energy companies.

What is green electricity?

Green electricity uses renewable energy sources and technologies without environmental impacts. Green electricity is considered renewable energy  because it is infinite. It leads to zero carbon emissions and helps reduce the carbon footprint.

Major forms of green electricity:

Wind Power – Wind turbines provide electricity. It is one of the world’s fastest growing energy sources. They are more efficient than traditional forms of energy production.

Solar Power – Solar power converts energy from the sunlight into electricity using photovoltanics.

Hydro Power – It is the cheapest form of energy, using the energy of moving water. Hydroelectric power provides around one-fifth of the world’s electricity.

Wave Power – Uses the force of wind waves to transport energy by placing electricity generators on top of ocean beds. There are only a handful of these operation plants around world.

Geothermal – It comes from hot rocks embedded underground. In some parts of the world, steam rises to the surface

Biomass – Agricultural waste or plants grown specifically for these purposes can run small power stations. As plants grow, they absorb carbon dioxide.

Initiatives like this should be commended for their innovation and corporate transparency.
