We want our energy to be green as soon as possible. We would also like to have all our transport off-gasoline already. However, we have had to come to terms with this taking a while longer to realize. The technology must be reliable and safe before we make the switch. A recent Tesla Model 3 autopilot fire confirms we have a way to go.
A Movie Atmosphere for a Tesla Model 3 Autopilot Fire
The information we have on hand is scanty as the news in still filtering through. All we know for sure is a Tesla Model 3 on auto drive collided with a tow truck on a Moscow highway on August 14 2019.
A passenger traveling in the opposite direction captured two short, sharp explosions on their webcam as the Tesla Model 3 autopilot fire erupted. They must have been mighty happy to have a solid concrete barrier between them. We sure would have been ourselves. The overall effect seems more like a Hollywood stunt, what with other vehicles gliding past as if nothing happened.
According to a witness the driver informed Moscow police he didn’t even see the tow truck before they collided. Moreover, the self-drive system was on and his hands were holding the steering wheel.
However, the situation was different according to a Dutch newspaper. They say the driver was looking at his kids in the backseat at the time. To complicate matters further “the sedan made no attempt to slow down, swerve, or warn the driver of an imminent collision”. So what really happened when a Tesla Model 3 autopilot fire lit up the night sky when the batteries erupted?
Did the autopilot and the battery safety system fail simultaneously? Or did the driver accidentally disengage the switch as he turned to engage his kids. Will we ever know what really happened for sure?
