The Edge: The Largest Vertical Solar Wall in Canada

The Edge

The Edge is the newest building in Edmonton, Alberta and it is designed by Dub Architects. It is aesthetically and literally attractive. We say ‘literally’ as one of the walls in made up of sun-attracting panels also known as solar panels!

The building takes place in downtown Edmonton across from the MacEwan university. It is 10-stories high and has two interesting design features. The first is its north wall which is a wall of windows that stretch from the ceiling to the floors insuring maximum sun exposure. The second is the south wall–and the most interesting wall–which is entirely made up of solar panels! 500 panels to be exact and at the price of $400,000. However, Gene Dub of Dub Architects, says that they are a great investment as they will pay for themselves within 5 years. They are also worth it as, with that much exposure to the sun, 80% of the building’s energy is solar-dependent!

In addition, Dub says that with the panels “you have enough power…to power up to 26 houses” and he hopes that the Edge will inspire others to incorporate solar power in their designs even more!

The Edge is set to open in June of 2017.

More On Dub Architects

Dub Architects Ltd. was established in Edmonton in 1975 by Gene Dub, an architect and former politician. The firm is responsible for many of Alberta’s beautiful and historic buildings plus many technology-forward ones! The architects at the firm ensure that their designs are what their clients desire by personalizing them to each client.

Some of their best works include the Albert Hotel reconstruction, the historic McLeod building, and the LeMarchand Mansion restoration. However, they also have many more designs and concepts on their website so check them out if you’d like:  http://www.dubarchitects.ca/index.html
