Our industry is entering a new phase, as solid-state batteries receive additional attention. This new design uses solid electrolyte, meaning that there is no liquid to leak out, or catch fire. The solid state battery project once again featured at Energy Taiwan 2024. We review the distinct advantages that are driving this transformation.
The Big Advantages Underpinning Solid State Batteries
We call the movement a ‘project’, although the participants are only loosely related, and often in competition with each other. One thing they all agree on though, is that the solid state battery design promises greater power density, and longer battery life.
Those features could offer relief to an electric car industry with slowing sales. Charging times, limited driving range, and main battery costs are deterring consumers. Nagging concerns over battery fires are also encouraging gasoline customers to stay where they are.
But solid state technology could sweep all these concerns away if battery makers were prepared to dive in, and retool their factories. There are exceptions, although many are still waiting in the sidelines for someone to overcome a few stubborn technical challenges.
This Emerging Technology Promises To Be a Game Changer
Lithium-ion technology is gradually reaching the end of the road. It has made a great contribution to the world of batteries, but manufacturers are stretching it to the limits. It is time for a safer battery offering faster charging times, and greater energy storage capacity.
The solid state battery project could provide fresh impetus to the North American electric vehicle market. But even more importantly, it could deliver enhanced energy storage security to utility power grids.
Transportation, and electricity generation and distribution, are major contributors to the global warming phenomenon that is threatening our future. Lithium-ion batteries proved that renewable energy is feasible. Now it is time to move onward to the next phase.
