The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects a third of Earth’s electricity will be from renewables by 2024. That’s quite an achievement, although it is “well short of what’s required” according to Crossroads Today. We will have to try harder if we are to meet our goals of fighting climate change effectively, it insists.
Why Is a Third of Earths Electricity Insufficient?
It never was enough, although we are now worse off than before. That’s because the global effort to fight air pollution has been waning in the face of narrower national interests. Coal is still king in many parts because governments and investors understand it.
We have to shift faster to true renewables despite commendable efforts thus far, the IEA warned on October 21, 2019. The United States may have made signature moves to abandon coal in favor of natural gas, wind, and solar. However, these efforts are inadequate to slow global warming to the extent necessary to ensure the survival of our species, many scientists warn. Far more than a third of Earths electricity must be green, and soon they say.
Therefore, Coal Will Still Be on Par with Green in 2024
The International Energy Agency report says coal will still generate a third of Earths electricity in 2024. This will be down from 40% in 2018, but it is still a devastating greenhouse gas emitter.
However, renewables are fighting back with China coming to the party. Solar power is making great inroads in European Union, India and Vietnam too. While the United States has impressive plans for wind growth, including off shore operations. However, the IEA believes that solar will become the new king after coal retreats, thanks to impressive falling prices.
We cannot – and we may not – relax our guard in the fight for global cooling. More than a third of Earths electricity must come from renewables by 2024. We absolutely have to try harder.
