Big numbers like a million, as in US COVID deaths are hard to comprehend in terms of suffering behind them. We found a handy source on Stat News on May 10, 2022 we decided to share. That’s because anything that translates headline data into reality helps us comprehend what we are still going through.

The 5 Big Facts Behind the Total US COVID Deaths

The US Mortality Rate Has Fallen

US mortality rates have fallen dramatically since the first deadly outbreak in April 2020. Remember those dark days in New York when there were 63 deaths per 100,000 people in one week? Imagine how many more millions of U.S. residents would have died were it not for our scientists.

Old People Are Still More At Risk But …

US Centers for Disease Control confirms the majority of Americans who die from COVID are over 65 years old. However, that does not mean young people are off the hook. That’s because the pandemic was the 2nd leading cause of death among people 25 to 34 after accidents in 2021.

Vaccinations Make a Big Difference

The death rate for vaccinated Americans is ten times lower than those who refuse the protection for whatever reason. That’s 2 per 100,000 during the Omicron peak, compared to 26 per 100,000. Having our boosters doubles the benefit again.

It’s No Longer Safer in Rural Areas

Some New Yorkers were tempted to shelter in the countryside when the pandemic struck. Something changed since then. By December 2020 a higher per-capita share of people died from COVID in rural than urban counties.

Poorer People Are Still Worse Off

Having disposable income adds a measure of protection but is not an escape route. US counties with lower insured rates have higher average deaths. A greater proportion of people in poverty are also at higher risk. This is a sad indictment we expect is similar any else in the world.

Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
