How do I pick a battery charger?

There are different types of batteries, so while choosing a battery charger you  must consider the types of the battery and purpose of the charger. There are mainly two types of chargers: personal chargers and fleet chargers. Personal chargers include chargers for cell phones, tablets, laptops, notebooks, or digital cameras. On the other hand, fleet chargers include the chargers that serve employees in a team environment and usually have multiple bays.

Chargers can be categorized based on how they work. For example, Simple, Trickle or Timer based. They can be classified based on charge times. Some chargers are fast while some others are medium or rapid and some others are slow.

 Now let’s try to find out the factors that determine the characteristics of a charger which is perfect for a particular application. There are mainly 3 factors to be considered while choosing a charger:

Battery Chemistry 

  • Most chargers serve only one battery chemistry. 

Battery Voltage

  • Before purchasing a charger make sure that the battery voltage is compatible with the charger. 

Purpose of the charger

  • If you are looking for a charger to charge small and infrequently used 12-volt engines, SCA 3 stage 2.5 amp battery charger would be great. This type of charger is perfect for lawn mowers, jet skis or even for classic cars less than 2.0 liters. 

  • Calibre 12-volt 3 stage charger will work best for 4 and 6 cylinder cars up to 3.0 liters.

  • When you are looking for a charger for batteries in a 5-10 amp system, pick 12 volt chargers which are appropriate for charging medium sized batteries or battery systems.

  • Usually built for workshop use, 12 volt, 11 to 20 amp output chargers are perfect for marine applications, house batteries and  RV’s.
