3-D Exposes Dendrites Forming in Batteries

A research team from University of Houston developed a ‘novel in-situ 3D microscopy’ to study localized electrochemical environments. Their current goal is to understand how dendrites originate in batteries, and develop better alternatives in future. Their novel 3-D exposes dendrites forming on the inside at material level, where few researchers may have been before.

Why This Research Matters for Future Batteries

Lithium batteries perform an essential role in current green energy technology. However, they prematurely age when metallic micro-structures form on their negative electrodes during charging, and this could short-circuit internals.

Moreover, those spiky dendrites reduce the life of the batteries and hinder their ability to hold a charge. This is why preventing them is so very important to battery scientists. However, most still use electrochemical measurements across the surface, or interior of the cell.

As a result, much battery research lacks 3-D ability to expose dendrites forming in real time. Although scientists may simulate this happening as is the case in this video from U.S. Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

3-D Exposes Dendrites Forming and More

We should be able identify chemical and physical solutions to prevent the growth of dendrites, once we understand the process. This would in turn bring us closer to developing ‘everlasting batteries’ that keep going longer.

The Houston research team has been able to geometrically map the birth of dendrites in lithium batteries. This puts them in a position to focus on the structural design of batteries, and improve it. However, lithium batteries may have to take a while to benefit directly from their work.

That’s because the team has decided to focus on building ‘highly efficient zinc-carbon batteries’ instead. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next. We do live in interesting times in our world of batteries!
