Will Electric Deliveries Start Slipping Silently Into Cities Soon?

We are in a thoughtful mood today. We wonder, will electric trucks begin the end of thundering motorway traffic soon? Shall we sleep more peacefully through the early hours of the morning despite first deliveries to local stores? While Elon Musk pursues his streamlined super carriers, Volvo is trialing its eminently practical FL green tractor. Electric deliveries are coming sooner than we thought from far across the Atlantic Ocean.

Volvo FL Electric Road Tractor Ready for Electric Deliveries in 2019

“We’re proud to present the first in a range of fully electrically-powered Volvo trucks ready for regular traffic. With this model we are making it possible for cities that aim for sustainable urban development to benefit from the advantages of electrified truck transports.” Volvo Trucks president Claes Nilsson told Business Day.

The first road tractors are on trial in Gothenburg, Sweden. Their 300 kilowatt-hour battery packs are already delivering up to 180 miles between recharges depending on the number of storage modules. Their 185kW electric motors are pumping out maximum continuous output of 130kW, and torque of 425Nm. While their gross vehicle weight rating is 16 tons, promising electric deliveries on a scale in tight urban areas to which we are accustomed.

There Are Many Advantages to Switching to Electric Deliveries

Volvo’s FL electric road tractors will make a small but significant contribution to the drive towards zero exhaust emissions. They are adapting well to working in indoor terminals, and exceed environmental rules many European cities are already implementing.

Moreover, their low noise levels will permit their use in sensitive areas such as hospitals, and retirement villages throughout the night. This equates to fewer trucks on the road in daytime, and less urban traffic congestion too.

The Volvo Group has sold over 4,000 electric buses since 2010, and so it knows the large electric vehicle sector well. It is working actively to recycle large primary batteries for electric storage.  This gives them a second life, and a reincarnated role to do something positive about global warming now.
