As the school year ends and summer breaks begins, we thought we’d share with you some of the highlights reported in the Hayden Robotics 2019 newsletter!

“This year’s FIRST® Robotics competition was called deep space. As its name suggests it
was space themed and required teams to secure cargo and hatch plates onto rockets and
spaceships. Our team competed on March 22-24 at York University and two weeks later
we went on to McMaster for our last competition. During our first competition, we were
met with significant challenges that were evident in the results of each game. Upon
hearing that you would come watch, the team was excited to show you the robot that
was made possible because of our sponsors and the dedication of each member of the
team. However, there were a number of games where we struggled with our robot’s
mobility. Once we discovered that the problem was due to a finicky laptop, we made
significant progress that, yet again, was met with technical difficulties which we fought by
changing our game strategy and going on defence. In the end, the competition at York
was emotionally, physically, and mentally taxing, but the results yielded at our second
competition showed an immense degree of progress.

Going into McMaster the team stepped in with renewed spirits and determination. Before
leaving York University we were able to reiterate our intake design and manufacture a
new intake for the cargo and hatch. So we expected the results of the competition to
reflect our efforts. The more we played, the more we understood where our strengths
stood. As each game went on, our cheers grew louder and louder. As we stomped,
clapped, and called out to those in the field in unison, each member of the team felt a
shared excitement and joy. It was our ultimate comeback. On that McMaster field, those
on the bleachers were able to watch our drive team lead us down a path of growth and
success. That weekend was memorable for all our members, we made it to the quarterfinals, but most importantly, our diligence was finally able to translate through our robot.

To describe the 2018-19 robotics season in one word, it would be astronomical. It was
astronomical in regards to the fun we had, the experience we gained, and the knowledge
obtained. Each student that has been a part of Hayden Robotics team #6323 will
remember the FIRST® Robotics experience and be able to apply the skills they have
learned in their future ventures. We recognize that all of this has been made possible not
just of our own accord, but through the support that you have provided us. For that, we
would like to thank you and express our sincere gratitude.”
