Trees are in the forefront of stopping global warming which is something we must do. That’s because they convert carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to oxygen so we and all other life can breath. Latest news out is Ethiopia beat tree-planting records on July 29, 2019. Moreover the prime minister is personally leading the project.

Ethiopia Beat Tree-Planting Records to Counter Deforestation

Drought-prone Ethiopia planted 350 million trees to counter climate change and deforestation in the country in a single day. Even public offices in the 1,000 target areas closed so government officials could lend a hand. We are deeply concerned that Ethiopian forests shrank from 35% of total land to 4% over the past century.

Therefore, we welcome the initiative and congratulate Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for his vision. Ethiopia has a population of approximately 100 million people. That’s an average 3.5 trees per person. Imagine if the rest of the world did the same. Eventually Ethiopia plans to plant a billion indigenous trees to restore their land

This Was a Remarkably All-Embracing Project

The African people share a philosophy they call Ubuntu. This says “I am because we are” expressing the universal bond of sharing. Therefore Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called his people from far and wide to be part of the day Ethiopia beat tree-planting records.

Promotional videos on state television urged Ethiopians to plant and care for trees. Staff from the United Nations, African Union and foreign embassies in Ethiopia volunteered to help improve the 2016 Indian record. Back then, 800,000 volunteers planted 50 million trees in a single day. If we had a finger on the pulse of Earth we should have done the same.

I am because we are, the Africans say. Now that would be a wonderful motto for the nations of the world to carry forward, as we confront global warming together.
