Bentley owners purchase their automobiles for leather luxury and brute power according to Digital Trends. If they were concerned about the environment they might own a more socially responsible vehicle like a Volkswagen instead, but they don’t. Perhaps they don’t know Volkswagen purchased the brutally luxurious Bentley brand in 1998 and may keep it going as a status sideline.
Money and Power in a Brutally Luxurious Bentley
Bentley shot to fame when it scooped the 24 hour Le Mans in 1924, and 1927 through to 1930. It followed the fortunes of its fans, becoming larger, more powerful and more luxurious as they made their millions.
The car may have never been socially responsible. In fact, the word does not make an appearance on the Bentley Wikipedia. Perhaps this is why Bentley is such a late entrant to the electric car market. And even then, its EXP 12 Speed 6E Concept web page makes no mention of climate change and the green economy. Perhaps owning a brutally luxurious Bentley is still uppermost in its market’s mind.
Bentley is Still About Luxurious Performance
The EXP 12 Speed 6E concept web page praises electric power for its ability to ‘exceed the performance limits of cars built on the conventional combustion engine … with heart-stopping acceleration’. Its customers will be able to drive from London to Paris or Milan to Monaco on a single charge.
It could be said this car epitomizes the struggle to save the climate. The Bentley electric concept appears to be larger and heavier than what’s strictly necessary. Therefore, it should have a weightier carbon footprint and be more climate expensive.
That said, this brutally luxurious Bentley is a truly glorious chariot and we would love to ride in one. There’s no doubt about that. However whether it is a socially responsible thing, despite the solid state batteries is another matter.
