We are reaching the end of our series regarding World Health Organization tips for special groups while Covid breaks out. Today we reach out to carers of children. World Health Organization Notes for Child Carers during Covid 19

Children are sharper than we may choose to believe. They know what is going on around them, and they sense their parents’ anxieties and cares. We should allow them space to explore, and come to terms with their emotions. Some may want to play; others may wish to express their feelings in creative ways.

The World Health Organization notes emphasize the need for children to stay close to parents. If parents must isolate or enter hospital, then the organization’s notes for child carers during Covid assume a more urgent tone. They must not attempt to become surrogate parents. They must ensure regular scheduled contact between children and parents, so the bond remains intact.

Child Carers Must Maintain their Charges’ Familiar Routines

Carers of children must plan for when normality returns, and they can withdraw. They must continue with normal routines, so parents can re-engage with as little disruption as possible.

This should include children socializing with friends and family as they did before. Whether you are a parent or carer, the World Health Organization advises children commonly seek more attachment. Prepare therefore for the children in your care to become more demanding and insistent.

Discuss what is happening around them in an honest and age-appropriate way. Speak to them directly without airbrushing the truth under the carpet. The WHO notes for child carers during Covid say children will observe your emotions. And look for evidence of consistency between what you say, and what you do.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
