We are in the midst of a global pandemic we never thought could happen to us with shielding from medical science. But it did, and now scientists, politicians and soothsayers bombard us with solutions. There are so many goals strategies and action plans for COVID-19 around it’s becoming hard to track them. We decided to apply some basic business logic to the situation.
Unpicking Goals, Strategies and Action Plans for COVID-19
A goal is a broad objective, like climbing up Mount Everest. In terms of this, a strategy could be ascending up the north face. Our first action plan might be reaching the base camp after we had the paperwork in place. So what does this tell is about the three main strategies to achieve our goal of ending the COVID-19 epidemic?
Optimistic politicians tend to regard vaccines as goals strategies and action plans for COVID-19 wrapped up in one. However, moderate scientists have yet to explain how to manufacture 7.8 billion doses. Let alone propose an action plan to get them to the world population. A vaccine could be just a wish list one-to-two years away as things stand. And there is no sign of a global action plan in sight.
Will Natural Immunity Do the Trick, or Are We On Our Own for Now?
There are more viruses than stars in the universe according to National Geographic. They are theoretically the cause of their own undoing, because their target population develops immunity to them.
However, this system failed when the SARS-CoV-2 virus causing COVID-19 crossed from an immune mammal to a human. After two years enough of us could catch the disease, recover, and become immune. But what happens if neither of these goals strategies and action plans for COVID-19 come to pass?
If we don’t develop a vaccine or a herd immunity within two years, then we could continue moving in and out of lock down. Prof Mark Woodhouse is professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh. He told a BBC reporter no country has an exit strategy yet. We still face ‘massive scientific and societal challenges’ and an uncharted path ahead.
