Way to Go to Counter the Virus with Immunity

We have a way to go to counter the virus with immunity, says a WHO report dated August 2, 2020. This is a most important indicator, because our chances of vaccinating everybody everywhere are slim. World Health Organization (WHO) says just over 35 million people have confirmed infections. And this means ‘the vast majority of the world remains at risk’.

As many as twice that number may have contracted the disease, but been unaware of it or been asymptomatic.  WHO estimates, on that basis that 10% of the global community had the disease. Although the number varies by country, urban and rural, and different groups, according to executive director Mike Ryan.

WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has again issued a call for solidarity according to BBC World. We need firm leadership, he says even though this is an uneven pandemic. We have a way to go to counter the virus with immunity, and we must stand together.

Marked Differences in Cases Around the World

Ten countries account for 70% of all reported cases and deaths, and just three countries account for half. More than one million people have died, according to John Hopkins University.

Herd immunity, currently at 10% of global population reflects the proportion of people with detectable COVID-19 antibodies. As this umbrella grows it protects the shrinking number of unprotected people from infection. That’s because there are more people around them to slow, or stop person-to-permission transmission.

However, we are not yet at that stage. We have a way to go before we can speak of meaningful herd immunity. We have to continue protecting ourselves by wearing face protection, maintaining open space around us, and sanitizing regularly. Because there is no other way.

I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
