This is a controversial subject, given the impassioned opinions on circuit about the coronavirus. However, it is a topic we feel we should debate, and share knowledge about it. Moreover, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA previously decided employers can insist on influenza shots. Therefore, employers considering mandating vaccine for COVID may have a precedent.
Opinions Among Employers Considering Mandating Vaccine
NPR News shared a spread of opinions on November 25, 2020. First up was a restaurant owner staying closed for COVID, until the entire team has the vaccine. She believes in taking care of her team, because her team helps take care of the business.
However, Tony Yang, executive director of Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University is more cautious. ‘It’s going to have lots of push back,’ he says. ‘And lots of people are going to claim exemptions’ out of concern for the safety of the vaccine.
A More Cautious Approach Among Some Large Employers
A Gallup poll before most recent trial results, found 42% of Americans said they would not accept the COVID-19 vaccine. That’s according to NPR News, which also included a large pork producer in their survey. Their spokesperson said they are ‘not planning a firm mandate’, but will offer the vaccine on site.
The news channel also interviewed a frozen food manufacturer among employers considering mandating vaccine for COVID. They also said they will also offer the vaccine, but not insist on it. The final interview was with Johnny Taylor Jr., president of the Society for Human Resource Management.
Johnny Taylor said he believes many employers will opt for mandates. And there are more now, than he would have guessed several months ago. That’s because employers have an obligation to get rid of known hazards in the workplace. And COVID-19 has proven to be a hazard unlike any other.
