Ontario COVID Outbreak Leads Canada Surge

Ontario province borders North America’s Great Lakes District, where it enjoys a reputation of being a pleasant, peaceful place. However, Toronto CTV put another spin on this when it reported daily cases jumped to over 3,700 on May 2, 2021. The surge is causing concern among health workers, says Geo TV News.  As Ontario COVID intensive care cases push them nearer their breaking point.

Ontario Daily COVID Cases Jump to 3,732

Toronto CTV news reports health officials confirm 363 more cases than they advised the day before.  The COVID-19 test positivity rate had also reached 8.5% that day, nudging it closer to the 10% indicator.

However, current intensive care patients dropped back slightly to just below 900, of whom 615 were on ventilators. But, as we well know that indicator lags some ten days behind the daily infection rate. And more worryingly, it is still hovering at 45% of all hospitalized patients.

Ontario is increasing the vaccination rate, although to date only a small number of people had their two doses. We can learn two lessons from this. Low vaccination correlates with high infection. And something has gone with the self-protection program.

Health Workers ‘Overwhelmed’ by Ontario COVID Surge

‘We’re overwhelmed by the Ontario COVID surge,’ a young care giver at Toronto’s Humber River Hospital told Agence France-Presse. While this is subjective, it apparently conveys her peers’ sense of powerlessness against ‘a total wave of new cases’.

We are writing this post not to spread alarm, because we believe the health department have things under control. But we are publishing this, because it’s no longer good enough to leave health workers to cope with the stress.

We, the people must bring our own part, by reducing the risk of infections ourselves. This means avoiding crowds, wearing face masks in public, sanitizing regularly, and personal distancing. India is a tragic lesson of what can happen when governments and people ignore this advice. Let’s not let this happen, where we live.
