Pandemic Will End If We Choose to End It

The COVID-19 pandemic is on the march again. Europe, Russia and North America are surging. It’s even got China on the hop. African COVID-19 deaths have increased 80% in the past four weeks, according to New York Times July 20, 2021. Caught in the eye of the storm the World Health Director has few words of comfort. ‘The pandemic will end when the world chooses to end it,’ he says.

We Have All the Tools We Need

‘We have all the tools we need,’ he continues. ‘It is in our hands. We can prevent this disease, we can test for it, and we can treat it.’ However, convincing governments and communities to use these tools is another matter, or so it seems to us.

The World Health Organization received reports totaling four million new COVID infections last week. Although this may only be the iceberg tip made visible through random testing.

The total COVID deaths reported worldwide are also ‘assumed to be similarly skewed’ according to New York Times. And that’s without mentioning ‘the excess mortality’ because hospitals had no beds to admit other patients.

The Pandemic Will End When We Use Those Tools

The Delta variant is riding on the back of human weakness. The World Health Director lists inconsistent use of public health measures, increased social mixing and mobility, and the inequitable use of vaccines and other treatments as core reasons.

‘Hard-won gains are in jeopardy or being lost,’ he frets, deeply concerned. ‘And health systems in many countries are being overwhelmed.’ The pandemic will end when we all do the right thing at the right time. But until we do that, we continue sailing through uncharted waters.
