Self-Discharge in Energy Storage

All idle batteries gradually self-drain their energy, as their chemical routines continue in the background. Until recently, this phenomenon has largely remained a matter of scientific interest. However, self-discharge in energy storage is far more critical, now that long-term energy storage plays an increasingly important role.

Battery Self-Discharge and Long-Term Storage

Scientists at Justus Liebig University in Germany, report on this matter in the findings we link to below. Self-discharge may be little more than a minor irritation when we cycle batteries frequently.

But self-discharge in energy storage batteries can become critical for stationary applications, where they are idle for long periods. In fact, if these periods are long enough, it may even affect their economic viability.

The Justus Liebig University team examined the role of ‘parasitic electronic currents’ inside batteries, that do not reach external loads. In this instance, their interest lay in solid-state batteries using inorganic solid electrolytes.

They concluded that internal self-discharge in these batteries is the result of ‘electronic partial conductivity, and internal discharge currents across the solid separator’. But there was more it than that …

Solid-State Battery Internal Self-Discharge

This background loss in solid-state battery state of charge, varies from the reversible chemical processes inside batteries during normal use. In fact, self-discharge in energy storage batteries is distinctly different.

The team at Justus Liebig University found that internal self-discharge ‘reduces energy efficiency but does not damage the solid-state battery’. It is simply ‘a minor electronic short circuit’, they say.

And thus, they conclude, we must separate this phenomenon from permanent battery degradation. Internal self-discharge may well affect a solid-state battery’s shelf life they say. But there is no impact on the calendar life of the battery, or how long it will remain useful.
