Mexico published coronavirus death data on March 28, 2021. The numbers are 60% higher than previously advised. Its new official death toll of 321,000 souls places it second in the world league table after United States. Moreover, the new curve follows a similar pattern to that of the United States. To say Mexico’s alarming adjusted COVID-19 deaths come as a shock, is an understatement.

How Did Mexico Get Into This Situation?

The UK BBC News channel enjoys a reputation for publishing accurate news, with unproven claims and rumors ironed out. Its news team says the Mexico opposition has accused the president ‘of downplaying the severity of the pandemic’. And it also accuses him of ‘delays in the vaccination program’.

However, it may also be possible the confusion is due to inadequacies in the system. Apparently, unnamed experts have long warned a lack of testing was masking the true situation. And furthermore ‘a shortage of intensive care beds in many states led to large numbers of people dying at home’.

Will Mexico’s Alarming Adjusted COVID-19 Deaths Trigger Action?

It’s hard to tell what will happen on the ground, now Mexico’s alarming adjusted COVID-19 deaths are in the public domain. The Mexican opposition apparently claims the Mexican president ‘does not take the crisis seriously enough. And often appears in public without wearing a face mask.’ He suffered an infection himself in January 2021, although by all accounts it was mild.

Some 90 million adults live in Mexico out of a total population of 127 million people. However, thus far only about 6.1 million doses were administered in the country, again according to BBC News.

The United States agreed to release 2.5 million Astra Zeneca doses to its southern neighbor after meeting over border issues. Mexico’s ‘COVID Czar’ Hugo Lopez-Gatell warns his country ‘risks a new wave of infections’. As millions of his compatriots prepare for their Easter holidays.

I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
