We suppose we should count ourselves fortunate to have two high-performing mRNA vaccines in free supply. However, being the competitive nation we are, there are bound to be discussions regarding which one is best. Pfizer has been running ahead in the stakes. But a CDC report comparing Moderna and Pfizer suggests the former is ‘significantly more effective’ against hospitalization and emergency care.
Why Does the Difference Matter – How Large Is It?
Governments have a duty to deliver the best possible service to their citizens. Both Moderna and Pfizer mRNA vaccines are very effective, compared to alternatives against severe disease. However, if one were consistently better than the other, then this could affect government policy.
Several studies reported differences between the two vaccines’ effectiveness over time, according to Yahoo News on September 15, 2021. However, it mentions some experts warning there are flaws in the head-to-head comparisons.
1… The studies used different measures of effectiveness. But they both found ‘effectiveness against severe disease remains relatively high’.
2… However, there is ‘gathering evidence from separate sources to paint a picture that may reflect a real biological phenomenon’.
A New CDC Study Favors Moderna Over Pfizer
The CDC report dated September 10, 2021 – see first link below – apparently reports Moderna was significantly more effective. And this was against hospitalization, emergency department, or urgent care encounters compared to Pfizer and Johnson vaccines.
However, a second smaller CDC study – see second link below – found more similar effectiveness levels against hospitalization. Yahoo News proposes several reasons for this apparently conflicting finding.
We’ll delve down deeper into those reasons in the next post. We can’t favor one over the other at this stage. Remember, both studies found ‘effectiveness against severe disease remains relatively high’.
