CNN Health produced an update concerning Johnson and Johnson vaccine effectiveness on September 21, 2021, that’s worth sharing. That’s because much water has passed under the bridge since the original assessment, and the new results are looking better. Moreover, it’s essential to have back-up for mRNA vaccines produced by Moderna and Pfizer, to cover any unexpected eventuality.

Two Dose Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Effectiveness 94%

The company released the findings of trials showing the two-dose regime is 94% effective against symptomatic infection. This places it in the same league as Pfizer and Moderna, adding that additional measure of comfort. The Phase 2 trial also adds an interesting spin to the debate around dose timing.

1… Two doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccine 56 days apart, provide 100% protection against severe Covid-19. And 94% protection against moderate to severe disease in the U.S. too.

2… However, a second study showed people given a booster six months or longer after the first dose, fare even better. They have a 12-fold increase in antibodies — compared to a four-fold increase for people who got a second dose at two months.

Johnson and Johnson Applying to FDA for Additional Authorization

The company intends using the new data on Johnson and Johnson vaccine effectiveness to motivate FDA approval of dual doses. The time lag compared to the mRNA vaccines is due to Moderna and Pfizer being initially approved sooner.

The Johnson product uses a different technology compared to those two, though. It delivers its messenger RNA or mRNA directly to the immune system wrapped in compounds called lipids. Moreover, it uses an adenovirus source it engineered from the coronavirus causing common colds.

Dr. Dan Barouch is head of Beth Israel Deaconess Center for Virology and Vaccine Research in Boston, Massachusetts. He proposes a dual approach to applying the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Administer the first dose to everybody he says, for initial strong, lasting protection. And then follow up later for outstanding protection.
