Take C.H.A.R.G.E of Battery Fires Says FSRI

The Fire Safety Research Institute, or FSRI for short, advances fire-safety knowledge to a broad audience. It hopes thereby to address the world’s unresolved fire safety risks, and emerging dangers as well. Lithium battery fires are one of these issues. The institute published a post titled Take C.H.A.R.G.E of Battery Fires we consider well worth sharing.

Take C.H.A.R.G.E of Battery Fires Acronym

The FSRI’s post features a public safety announcement video we relay below. This seeks to address the fire-safety risks emanating from lithium-ion batteries, and the importance of taking preventative action. Although we imagine their advice should apply equally to most other fire risks too.

FSRI timed their call to take c.h.a.r.g.e of battery fires, to coincide with the ramp up to the holiday season. This is a time for giving. More than ever there is a chance some gifts may contain lithium-ion batteries, especially when they are for kids, and that’s food for thought.

So What Are the Precautions in the FSRI Video?

  • CHOOSE a lithium-ion battery with certification by a nationally-recognized testing laboratory. This should confirm that it meets safety standards.
  • HANDLE the product with care at all times according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Avoid leaving a lithium-ion battery charging unattended.
  • Remain ALERT for any warning signs, including heating, swelling, smoking, or leaking. Stop using a suspect lithium-ion battery immediately.
  • RECYCLE all electric batteries responsibly, by isolating the terminals, labeling them, and handing them in at an official repurposing site.
  • GET OUT immediately if you are anywhere near a lithium-ion battery fire. Do not try to extinguish it. Call emergency services and evacuate immediately.
  • EDUCATE other people, including friends, family, and work colleagues, about the dangers of lithium-ion battery fires. Convince them that this problem is real.

C.H.A.R.G.E. is the short form for CHOOSE, HANDLE, ALERT, RECYCLE, GET OUT, and EDUCATE. Let’s all promote battery-safe holidays this Thanksgiving, with Christmas, and New Year around the corner.
