E-Bike Fires Not Good News for Lithium-Ion

Lithium-ion technology has been on a roll for the past decade. That’s because its batteries outperform all others in terms of power output. However, their popularity has attracted a number of entrants to the market who cut corners with safety. Their sub-standard manufacturing methods are leading to an increasing number of e-bike fires. These are not good news for lithium-ion. Why are these fires happening?

Why Are E-Bike Fires Breaking Out on Electric Scooters?

There are three main reasons why fires break out on e-bikes. They all have to do with their batteries, according to insurance provider HDFC ERGO:

  • If they have lithium-ion batteries, then these contain an electrolyte liquid which may catch fire if it overheats.
  • Heat is the number one enemy of lithium-ion batteries. An overheated battery can expand, explode and catch fire.
  • E-bikes contain various internal and external components. Some e-bike fires begin in inferior replacements and spread to their batteries.

Replacing e-bike parts – including their batteries – with inferior, non-certified components not only compromises the scooter. It can also literally burn the house down or the apartment.

Tips from HDFC ERGO to Help Avoid This Happening

  • Read the user manual carefully from ‘cover to cover’. Learn how your e-bike works, and follow the instructions.
  • Register your battery warranty immediately. If the battery does not seem right, stop using the bike and order a replacement.
  • Only use the recharging cables that come with the bike. That way you know the battery is receiving the correct current.
  • Never use extension cables. These can also interfere with the current, overheat the battery, and lead to e-bike fires.

A lithium-ion battery can still malfunction even after these precautions, especially if it is damaged. Always make sure you are nearby when recharging an e-bike battery. Check for signs of overheating regularly, and stop the process if it becomes hot. Keep your trusty bike safe and sound at all times, and enjoy your ride.
