Samsung Opts for Solid Prismatic Batteries

The InterBattery 2025 Expo in Seoul, South Korea, is alive with new electric vehicle batteries of all shapes and sizes. However, battery connoisseurs may be more curious to learn why Samsung opts for solid prismatic chemistry now. We explore Samsung’s line of reasoning, to bring you up to date too.

Samsung’s Solid Prismatic Batteries are Tougher, Safer

Samsung’s centerpiece stand at the show, clearly has safety in mind. Their new approach teams solid state chemistry, with a lack of flammability. And then encases this chemistry in a robust, prismatic case, to complete the recipe for a stable, safer battery.

However, the company does not stop there. They have added a ‘thermal propagation calculator program’ to the mix. And as Yanoticias explains on their website, this maps heat flows and contributes to avoiding thermal runaways.

We hope as Samsung opts for solid prismatic batteries, its focus on safer and more reliable technology pays dividends. And that it succeeds in making electric vehicles safer, and more reliable in the interests of consumers.

The Samsung prismatic batteries are inside robust aluminum cases, for durability, strength and added safety. The company website goes on to assure consumers that this will make them resistant to external impacts. And that this in turn will ‘minimize the risk of electrolyte leakage or internal short circuits’:

  • The aluminum cases ‘should prevent heat from spreading to other cells’, they add, even if an impact triggers heat.
  • And moreover, the high thermal conductivity of the aluminum material, should ‘also help to dissipate heat more quickly’.
  • A vent in the battery case should ‘release gas, when internal temperature and pressure rise due to external factors’.

Samsung also claims superior performance from its solid-state, high-performance prismatic batteries. And finally, the batteries promise high density per volume too, because of their efficient, rectangular design.

About Author

Electricity has always intrigued me. I have been writing about batteries and energy storage for more than ten years, and have published over 4,000 articles on this website. During that time, I have researched developments across lead-acid, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, flow batteries, and emerging energy-storage technologies. My goal is to explain complex battery concepts in clear, practical language that anyone can understand. My writing career began unexpectedly after leaving the corporate world. What started as a search for a new direction gradually became a fascination with batteries, renewable energy, and the science that powers modern life. Writing may not have made me wealthy, but it has given me the opportunity to explore an industry that continues to evolve in remarkable ways.
