Interest in sodium-ion batteries in the United States seemed unremarkable three months ago. But this interest might accelerate. Geopolitical tensions could map a new way for sodium, if the price of lithium skyrockets due to import tariffs.
Sodium Healthy Before Geopolitical Tensions Began
Sodium was already improving its prospects, before U.S. import tariffs rose sharply. We have reported on a number of innovative research projects here. We were beginning to believe that a sodium-ion battery was only a matter of time, before the tariffs began.
Sodium-ion technology has a number of advantages, perhaps biding their time until the right circumstances arose. In the first instance, they are more cost-effective to produce. Although perhaps their greatest advantage over lithium-ion is they are safer, and cannot catch alight.
Another big advantage with sodium-ion, is its ability to deliver all of its energy in a blistering two minutes, compared to lithium-ion’s two hours. Chinese battery-manufacturing companies, including BYD and Amperex, have begun investing in this promising technology.
Recent events have signaled just how critical minerals are, to our evolving electronic world. The geopolitical tensions mapping a way forward for sodium-ion technology, remind us of the need for energy independence.
