Electric trucks and delivery vehicles are catching on in Canada, as the technology aligns with business priorities. Customers appreciate less diesel fumes pumping out during deliveries. Truckers are aligning themselves with the need to help counter climate warming. We decided it was time to discuss electric truck batteries in Canada, where we have our lead-acid battery factory.
Canada’s Most Popular Electric Truck Batteries
Lithium-ion batteries still dominate the delivery vehicle market. However, lithium iron phosphate, and nickel cobalt aluminum alternatives provide more miles for long haul applications.
Nickel metal hydride batteries have become less popular, because of their shorter driving range and higher cost. Auxiliary lead-acid batteries continue to remain a favorite source of energy, for auxiliary systems.
Driving Ranges Between Battery Charges Improving
Driving range per battery charge has become less of an issue, according to 7GEN consultants. Most electric delivery vehicles come standard with 200 to 300 mile driving ranges.
Those distances are more than adequate for delivery vehicles that remain within city limits. Some long-haul alternatives squeeze an additional 75 miles, whereafter the driver should take a safety break while the battery recharges.
Maximizing Electric Truck Driving Range
There are several ways to extend the driving range between battery recharges. The first involves using common sense / telematics to reduce stop-start driving. Other options include keeping the main battery warm at night, and recharging every night when electricity is cheap.
Helping the Main Battery Last Longer
Electric truck batteries in Canada could last 10 to 15 years, with proper care. However, this time period will reduce if we abuse the batteries. Here are a few proven tips:
- Maintain a state of charge between 20% and 80%, so the battery stays in its ‘comfort zone’.
- Try to use slower AC charging whenever you can. Regular DC charging shortens battery life.
- Precondition a battery to close to room temperature, before you charge it in extreme weather.
Electric delivery vehicles and trucks cost less to operate when we use them correctly, They definitely cause less pollution than internal combustion engines, which is the overarching goal we should all strive for.
