Battery Life Span and What’s Possible

Generally speaking, the longer a battery lasts the more we pay for it. Although the voltage it puts out adds another layer to the calculation. Today, we consider battery life span in more detail. And arrive at the conclusion that the application should determine the length, and not some or other vanity factor.

What Battery Life Span Means to the User

There are numerous types of batteries, readily available on the internet for electronic circuits. These include alkaline, carbon-zinc, primary lithium, rechargeable lithium, and zinc-air chemistries. The best choice among these depends on the application for which they are intended.

For example, just to mention one at random, alkaline chemistry may suit most consumer applications, even though the battery life span, or calendar life is just a few months – and they perform best at moderate temperatures in which you and we feel comfortable with too.

However, and this is an important thing to note. Alkaline calendar life could prove tricky if the batteries were in an inconvenient location. And especially if those batteries were in a hot environment that drained their energy.

Circumstances When More Expensive Is Better

Lithium batteries are usually worth their salt where the situation calls for a long battery life span, and especially if they are in a difficult, or remote location. This is why we mentioned in our introduction that the application, not the brand should dictate the choice. However, not all lithium batteries are created equal.

And so the right consumer choice also depends on the battery’s temperature-robustness, flammability properties, and so on. Lithium-ion technology is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. It is time for consumers to understand poly-carbon-monofluoride, manganese-dioxide, lithium-thionyl-chloride, and so on better.

I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
