We’ve made a post about the newest team joining the Solar Splash competition, now it’s time to talk about one of the oldest ones: Cedarville Solar Boat team. Belonging to the Cedarville University, this team has been competing since 1997 for a total of 17 times! They have won first place 8 times and have been ranked in the top 5 for 15 out of 17 competitions!

A Few Facts

-The Cedarville solar boat team was created in 1997 and that was their first year of participating. They did not start off with the highest ranks (12th and 18th). However, since 2004, they have only scored below the top 5 twice! Yes, you heard that right. If you weren’t impressed before, you have to be now!

-This year, 2017, will mark their 18th time entering the competition and it could be their 3rd year in a row winning! This team is definitely filled with experienced members who are extremely proud of their achievements-as they should be! For example, aside from ranking #1 for the overall competition, they have continuously ranked in the top 3 for the endurance, quality, technical, visual aspects of the competition!

-The team has also participated in the Dutch Solar Challenge and has been hosting the Solar Splash competition since 2014!

Okay I’m Impressed, But What is This for Anyways?

In case the video doesn’t help and in case you havn’t read other posts about the Solar Splash competition,  here is a little brief description: it is a freshwater solar power competition open to all colleges. The goal is finding the teams that can best exploit the sun in a small watercraft. The duration of the event is five days and it tests workmanship, endurance, speed and resourcefulness.  The five days include on-site and on-water challenges. After the teams and their boats get tested for security and eligibility, they move on to the races/challenges. These include the Solar Slalom, the Solar Endurance and a 300 meter race.
