The Ademco Vista 20PSIA is an alarm system manufactured by ADT to provide security against burglary, fire and emergencies. It comes with a backup battery (which looks like this) to keep it operational even during power outages.

If the keypad displays “BAT” without a zone number, that means the battery power is drained. Along with this warning, you will also hear a beeping sound that you can turn off by pressing [1 OFF]. Try recharging the battery by turning the AC power on. If the warning is still there after 1-2 days of charging, you may have to replace the battery. This usually happens every 3-5 years.

To change the battery of the Ademco Vista 20PSIA, follow these steps.

  1. Buy the replacement battery for Ademco Vista 20PSIA.
  2. Put the alarm system on test mode.
  3. Find the control panel box and open it to access the backup battery.
  4. Remove the battery by disconnecting the black wire from the black terminal (negative). Then disconnect the red wire from the red terminal (positive). Use pliers with insulated handles to keep safe. If the wire is tight, try to wiggle it. BE CAREFUL as you remove the battery to avoid a short.
  5. Take off the plastic terminal protector of the new battery. Connect the red wire first to the red positive terminal before you connect the black wire to the black negative terminal.
  6. Close the control panel box.
  7. Check if the “BAT” is still displayed in the keypad. Let the new battery recharge for 1-2 days but if the warning persists after that, there might be a problem with the system. Call the alarm provider for help.
  8. Send the old battery to be recycled.

Dear Sir, As a woman I am not too savy at working on my alarm system . It’s a Honeywell .
I haven’t noticed this before but on the keypad display , it says CHIME BAT. Does that mean there is a problem with the battery in the system? Please help me. I am concerned.

    • It sounds like you need to replace the battery in the door chime, not the alarm panel itself. Take a look at the chime, some of them have small lithium batteries inside that last a few years then need to be replaced.
