How To Change The Battery In A BHS 1202/2000

The BHS 1202/2000 is an alarm system from ADT that provide homes with added security against fire, emergency and burglary. It is supported by a backup battery that looks like this. This battery allows it to function even during a power outage. However, this battery will need replacement after 3-5 years.

If the system starts to beep and you see the keypad displays “BAT” with no zone number, that is an indication that the power in the battery is drained. Press [CANCEL] to turn off the beeping sound and turn on the AC power to recharge the backup battery. If 1-2 days have passed and the display still shows a low bat warning, that means your battery requires replacement.

To install a new battery for your BHS 1202/2000, here are the steps that you need to follow:

Purchase a new battery for the BHS 1202/2000.
Place the alarm system on test mode.
Locate the control panel box and open it to access the backup battery. You can find this in the attic, garage, or a closet.
Remove the old battery by disconnecting the black wire from the black terminal and the red wire from the red terminal. Use pliers with insulated handles to protect yourself. In case the wires are tough to remove, try to wiggle them. BE CAREFUL not to short the battery when you remove it.
Take off the plastic terminal protector before connecting the new battery. Connect the red wire to the red terminal (positive). Then connect the black wire to the black terminal (negative).
Close the control panel box.
Look at the keypad display to check if the low battery warning is still there. Allow the new battery to recharge for 1-2 days. If the warning is still there after the 2nd day, it might be caused by a malfunctioning alarm system. Call your alarm provider for assistance.
Recycle the old battery.
