Climate Change Part 7: 1927 Passed Us By

1927 was a watershed year for humanity, although the people hardly noticed. The disasters of the 1914 – 1918 War were largely over. However, nobody anticipated the 1929 Great Depression looming. It was ‘party time’ for those who benefited from the surge of economic growth.  Thus, 1927 passed into history as an environmental disaster without a single government raising the alarm.

1927 Passed with Global Emissions Exceeding a Billion Tonnes

Total annual global emissions exceeded the one billion tonne mark for the first time as 1927 passed. What is measured they say is managed. Nobody was measuring the emission rate, and so humankind passed another threshold without knowing what was happening.

However, scientists were not standing by idly twiddling their thumbs. Two scientists from the University of Kiev, and the University of California independently explained why plants and trees grow toward the sun. However, the notion that the sun is the source of life went hardly noticed in the flurry of counter arguments over chemistry.

How the Big Bang Theory Arrived in 1927

The emergence of life, the evolution of humanity, and our possible demise all hinge off the big bang theory. In April 1927, Abbé Georges Lemaître published a treatise proposing the expansion of the universe leading to the Hubble Law.

Einstein applauded him saying, “This is the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I have ever listened.” Nevertheless, humanity continued hell bent with overpopulation and global warming.

We should like to add our own observations. How could science have ignored the smokestacks of power stations pumping clouds of carbon in 1927?  And the steadily increasing petroleum fumes in our cities. This is a sanguine warning for us too.

We cannot afford to follow our leaders blindly into 2019 either, as 1927 passed decades ago. We must challenge the assumption that prosperity runs ahead of its consequences. Or the outcomes it leaves behind us for future generations.

I tripped over a shrinking bank balance and fell into the writing gig unintentionally. This was after I escaped the corporate world and searched in vain for ways to become rich on the internet by doing nothing. Despite the fact that writing is no recipe for wealth, I rather enjoy it. I will not deny I am obsessed with it when I have the time. I live in Margate on the Kwazulu-Natal south coast of South Africa. I work from home where I ponder on the future of the planet, and what lies beyond in the great hereafter. Sometimes I step out of my computer into the silent riverine forests, and empty golden beaches for which the area is renowned. Richard
